    Getting There

    Walking

    From JR Nagano Station, the temple is approximately a 30-minute walk. Exit the station via the Zenkōji Exit and follow the temple markers. Head north on Chuo-Dori street; the temple will appear at the end of the street. This route allows you to explore the city and the shops lining the street.

    Public Transport

    From JR Nagano Station, take a bus from Bus Stop #1. All buses from this stop go to Zenkōji. Get off at the Zenkōji Daimon bus stop, from which it is a 5-10 minute walk to the Main Hall. The bus fare is approximately ¥190. Alternatively, take the Nagano Dentetsu Line from the underground station next to JR Nagano Station to Zenkojishita Station (4 minutes, ¥170), followed by a 5-10 minute walk.

    Taxi

    A taxi from JR Nagano Station to Zenkōji Temple costs approximately ¥1200-¥1350. The ride takes about 10 minutes. Taxis are readily available at the station's taxi stands.

    Car

    If driving, there are several paid parking lots near Zenkōji Temple. Parking Lot #1, located northwest of the temple, is open 24 hours. Parking fees are generally around ¥500. From the Nagano IC or Suzaka-Nagano-Higashi IC, it takes approximately 40 minutes to drive to Zenkōji Temple.

    Zenkōji Temple, located in Nagano City, has been a revered pilgrimage site for over 1400 years. Founded in 642 AD, the temple is said to house the first Buddhist statue brought to Japan. While the original statue is hidden, a replica is displayed every six years. The next opportunity to view it will be in 2027.The temple complex includes the Main Hall (Hondo), a National Treasure rebuilt in 1707, featuring a unique 'Shumoku Zukuri' structure. Visitors can explore the inner chamber for a closer look at the altar. A highlight is the 'Okaidan Meguri,' an underground passage where visitors seek the 'key to paradise' in complete darkness, symbolizing the search for enlightenment. The Sanmon Gate, dating back to 1750, offers panoramic views of the temple and city. The Zenkōji History Museum showcases Buddhist sculptures and artifacts.Outside the main buildings, the temple grounds invite exploration.
