Discover more about Kusatsu Hot spring Tourist Association.

The Kusatsu Onsen Tourist Association is your gateway to experiencing the renowned Kusatsu Onsen, nestled in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture. Situated on the first floor of the Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal, the association provides comprehensive information to help you navigate and appreciate this historic hot spring town. Kusatsu Onsen has a rich history, with legends tracing its discovery back over 1800 years. Figures like Prince Yamato Takeru and priest Gyoki are said to have found the springs, and it was favored by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate. In the Edo period, Kusatsu was recognized as one of Japan's top hot springs, with the eighth shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune even having its waters transported to Edo (Tokyo). The German physician Dr. Erwin von Bälz, in the late 19th century, praised Kusatsu's therapeutic benefits and helped introduce it to the world as a premier spa resort. Today, Kusatsu Onsen attracts visitors with its potent, highly acidic waters known for healing properties. The Yubatake, a central hot water field, is a symbol of the town, where mineral-rich waters gush from the ground and are cooled using wooden troughs. From the Tourist Association, you can easily access attractions like the Netsunoyu hall for yumomi performances (a traditional water-cooling technique), Sainokawara Park with its steamy hot spring river, and various arts, crafts, and food shops. The association can provide guidance on the different types of springs, including the Jizo area, and the best spots for bathing.
