Getting there

Car

If you are driving from central Dewa, head east on Route 13 (Yamagata Expressway) towards Yamagata City. Take the exit towards Zao Onsen and continue on the road that leads directly to Zao Ropeway Zao Sanroku Station. The station is located at 229-3 Zaoonsen, Yamagata, 990-2301. There is parking available at the station, but be aware that it can fill up quickly during peak seasons. The parking fee is typically around ¥500 for the day.

Public Transportation - Bus

From Yamagata Station, take the Yamagata City Bus bound for Zao Onsen. The bus ride takes approximately 40 minutes. Get off at the Zao Onsen bus stop. From there, it's a short walk (about 10 minutes) to the Zao Ropeway Zao Sanroku Station. Make sure to check the bus schedule in advance, as the frequency may vary, especially on weekends and holidays.

Public Transportation - Train and Bus

If you prefer taking the train, you can take the Yamagata Shinkansen from Tokyo or Sendai to Yamagata Station. From Yamagata Station, transfer to the Yamagata City Bus to Zao Onsen as described above. Ensure to purchase a round-trip bus ticket at the station to save costs, as a one-way ticket is around ¥1,000.
