Walking
From Gassan Eighth Station, the most popular trailhead, the final approach to Gassan Shrine involves a 2.5-hour hike. Follow the well-marked trail, passing Midagahara Marsh. The path ascends gradually, becoming steeper and rockier as you approach the summit. A purification fee of ¥500 is required before entering the shrine.
Public Transport
From JR Tsuruoka Station, take a Shonai Kotsu bus bound for Gassan Hachigome (Gassan 8th Station). The bus ride takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. From Gassan Eighth Station, follow the walking guidance to reach the shrine. Bus fare is around ¥1,500-2,000. Check the Shonai Kotsu website for the most up-to-date schedule.
