Rissyakuji Temple (Yamadera) Travel Guide

Rissyakuji Temple, more popularly known as Yamadera, is a captivating mountainside temple complex located northeast of Yamagata City. Founded in 860 A.D. by the Buddhist priest Jikaku Daishi, it belongs to the Tendai sect and is considered one of the Tohoku region's most important spiritual sites. The temple's main image is a hibutsu statue of Yakushi Nyōrai.Yamadera's fame is deeply intertwined with the renowned haiku poet Matsuo Bashō, who visited in 1689 and composed one of his most celebrated poems here: “Ah this silence / sinking into the rocks / voice of cicada”.
