Memorial Tower Dedicated to Mobilized Students: A Silent Testimony

Located near the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima, the Memorial Tower Dedicated to Mobilized Students serves as a solemn tribute to the students who lost their lives during World War II. Constructed in 1967, the 12-meter-tall tower is a five-tiered structure designed to console the spirits of approximately 10,000 students, including atomic bomb victims, who died in bombings during the Pacific War.In August 1944, the Japanese government enacted the Student Labor Service Act, mobilizing middle and high school students to work in munitions factories and demolition sites due to labor shortages. On August 6, 1945, around 6,300 of the 8,400 mobilized students in Hiroshima City perished in the atomic bombing, along with many others working in various industries.The tower features a statue of the goddess of peace and four relief panels depicting the students' wartime labor. Each year on August 6th, a memorial service is held in front of the tower, providing a space for reflection, remembrance, and a renewed commitment to peace. The tower's construction was funded by bereaved families who sought to ensure that the students' sacrifices would never be forgotten. The site offers informative plaques detailing the students' stories and the historical context of their mobilization.
