    Discover more about Daikanbo

Daikanbo, perched at 2,316 meters on the east side of Mount Tateyama, serves as a breathtaking natural observatory. Its name, translating to "grand observation peak," perfectly captures the essence of this location. Here, visitors are treated to unparalleled panoramic views of the deep and steep Kurobe Gorge and the majestic Tateyama Mountain Range. Daikanbo's strategic location makes it a highlight of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a remarkable journey through the Northern Japan Alps. The route, completed in 1971, connects Toyama City in Toyama Prefecture with Omachi Town in Nagano Prefecture, utilizing various modes of transportation like cable cars, electric buses, and ropeways. From the observation deck, Lake Kurobe shimmers 850 meters below in the Kurobe Gorge. To the left, the imposing Mount Harinoki rises to 2,821 meters, while Mount Akazawa reaches 2,678 meters on the right. The absence of support towers on the Tateyama Ropeway, stretching towards Kurobe-Daira, is a testament to engineering ingenuity, designed to prevent avalanche damage in this heavy snowfall area. Directly above, Mount Oyama, the main peak of the Tateyama Mountain Range, commands attention at 3,003 meters. The tunnel between Murodo and Daikanbo, initially constructed in 1971 to transport materials for the Kurobe Dam, now carries electric buses. This narrow, 3.7-kilometer tunnel passes beneath Mount Oyama, offering a unique glimpse into the mountain's interior.
