Originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was converted into a temple after his death in 1408. This iconic landmark reflects in the surrounding pond, creating a stunning scene.

Public Transport
From Kyoto Station, take Kyoto City Bus number 205 or 101. The bus ride takes approximately 40 minutes and costs 230 yen. Get off at the Kinkakuji-michi bus stop, from which the temple entrance is a short walk. Alternatively, take the Karasuma Subway Line from Kyoto Station to Kitaoji Station (15 minutes, 260 yen). From Kitaoji Station, take a taxi (10 minutes, approximately 1500 yen) or Kyoto City Bus number 204 or 205 (10 minutes, 230 yen) to Kinkaku-ji.

From the Kinkakuji-michi bus stop, walk north for about 5 minutes. Follow the signs towards Kinkaku-ji Temple. The path leads through a small shopping street before arriving at the temple entrance.

Taxis are readily available throughout Kyoto. A taxi from Kyoto Station to Kinkaku-ji will cost approximately 5,000 yen, depending on traffic. The journey takes around 30 minutes.
