Getting there

Public Transport

From Osaka or Umeda Station, take the Midosuji Line to Namba Station. From there, walk north towards Shinsaibashi. The Dotonbori River divides Shinsaibashi and Namba, and the Dotonbori Bridge is the convergence point for both neighborhoods. The subway fare is approximately ¥200-¥230. Alternatively, multiple subway lines run through the area, including the Midosuji, Sennichimae, and Yotsubashi lines, with Namba Station being the nearest stop.

Walking

Dotonbori is a 15-minute walk from Namba Station. Head north from Namba Station towards the Dotonbori Canal. The Glico Running Man sign on Ebisubashi Bridge is a prominent landmark in the area.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available in Osaka. A short taxi ride from Osaka Station to Dotonbori typically costs between ¥2,200 and ¥2,700 and takes approximately 4 minutes. Note that traffic can affect travel time and cost.

Dotonbori, located in the Namba district of Osaka, is a captivating entertainment area that has been a hub of activity since the early 17th century. In 1612, a local merchant named Yasui Doton invested his fortune to expand the Umezu River, creating a canal to boost commerce. Although Doton died during the Siege of Osaka, his cousins completed the project, naming the canal Dotonbori in his honor.Over the years, Dotonbori evolved into a prominent entertainment district, attracting theater companies, playhouses, restaurants, and teahouses. While the theater scene declined after World War II, Dotonbori has thrived as a gastronomic paradise and nightlife destination. Today, it is famous for its bright neon lights, extravagant signage, and the lively atmosphere that embodies Osaka's spirit.The Glico Running Man sign is Dotonbori's unofficial mascot. Erected in 1935 as an advertisement for Glico, the Japanese food company, the sign features a man running on a blue track and has become an iconic symbol of Osaka. Other notable landmarks include the Kani Doraku crab restaurant with its giant moving crab, and various three-dimensional billboards.Visitors can explore Dotonbori by strolling along the Tombori Riverwalk, taking a river cruise, or delving into the backstreets to discover hidden gems.
