Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan's most impressive fortresses, boasts a rich history dating back to 1607. Severely damaged in the 2016 earthquakes, it stands as a testament to Kumamoto's spirit, with ongoing restoration efforts and select areas open to the public.

Public Transport
From JR Kumamoto Station, take the Kumamoto City Tram to Kumamotojo-mae tram stop. The ride is approximately 15 minutes and costs ¥180. From the tram stop, it's a short walk to the castle entrance. Alternatively, take the Kumamoto Castle Loop Bus (Shiromegurin) from Kumamoto Station to the Ninomaru parking lot. A one-way trip costs ¥160 for adults or a day pass is available for ¥400.
Walking
From Kumamoto Station, it is approximately a 30-45 minute walk to Kumamoto Castle. The route is scenic and well-marked. From the central Kumamoto area, walking to the castle takes approximately 23 minutes.
Taxi
A taxi from Kumamoto Station to Kumamoto Castle takes about 3 minutes and costs approximately ¥1500-¥1900. From central Kumamoto, a taxi ride is even shorter and cheaper.
