Discover more about Kumamoto Castle

Kumamoto Castle, কনstructed by Kato Kiyomasa between 1601 and 1607, is celebrated as one of Japan's three premier castles. Originally featuring 49 turrets, 18 turret gates and 29 smaller gates, the castle has been a stage for significant historical events over its 400-year history. Key moments in the castle's past include the Seinan Civil War in 1877, when it withstood a 50-day siege. Although the original castle keep was destroyed by fire during this conflict, a ferro-concrete reconstruction was built in 1960, housing a modern museum that showcases the castle's history. The Honmaru Goten Palace, reconstructed in 2008 using traditional materials and methods, offers visitors a glimpse into the opulent living quarters of the feudal lord. However, it is currently closed and is scheduled to reopen by 2033. The devastating earthquakes of 2016 caused widespread damage, leading to ongoing restoration work expected to continue until around 2048. Despite this, parts of the castle have reopened, including an elevated walkway offering close-up views of the main tower. Visitors can also explore Ninomaru Park and Kato Shrine for unique perspectives of the castle.
