Discover more about Izu Peninsula Geopark

The Izu Peninsula Geopark, located southeast of Japan's main island Honshu, is a testament to the powerful forces that have shaped our planet. Designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2018, the peninsula offers visitors a chance to witness the results of millions of years of volcanic activity and tectonic plate shifts. The geopark's geological history dates back approximately 20 million years when the Izu Peninsula was a group of submarine volcanoes in the South Seas. As the Philippine Sea Plate moved northwards, the volcanic group drifted and eventually collided with the main island of Honshu around 600,000 years ago. This collision created the peninsula's unique landscape, characterized by mountains, coastlines and hot springs. Izu Peninsula is the only place in the world where two active volcanic arcs collide. The Izu Peninsula boasts a diverse range of natural attractions, including dramatic coastlines like the Jogasaki Coast, formed by volcanic rock. Central Izu features highlands with fast-flowing canyons and waterfalls carved into the volcanic rock. The peninsula is also famous for its hot springs, such as Atami and Shuzenji, which draw visitors year-round. Visitors can explore the geopark through various activities, including hiking along footpaths, taking a Geosite Cruise, or sea kayaking to view cliff formations. The Ryugu Sea Cave, with its heart-shaped opening, is a popular spot. The Izu Peninsula Geopark Museum Georia provides further information on the region's geological heritage.
