Overview

Jionji Temple, also known as Jionji Kannon, is a Tendai sect temple with a rich history dating back to 824 AD. The temple is located in Iwatsuki Ward, Saitama, a historic area known as the 'Doll Town'. Jionji stands on a 13.5-hectare land and offers a tranquil escape from the city.The temple's main hall, rebuilt in 1843, houses the principal image of the Thousand-armed Kannon Bodhisattva. Visitors can explore the grounds and discover the pagoda dedicated to Genjo Sanzo, a Chinese monk known from the novel 'Journey to the West'; the pagoda enshrines some of his remains. The temple complex also features a large gate and seasonal displays, including a chrysanthemum exhibition in November.Jionji Temple is part of the Bando Sanjusankasho pilgrimage route, making it a significant site for pilgrims. The well-maintained grounds and dignified ambiance provide a calming experience for all visitors.
