Getting There
Car
If you're traveling by car, start your journey from central Tokyo. Take the Tohoku Expressway (東北自動車道) towards Utsunomiya. The drive will take about 2 hours, covering approximately 140 kilometers. Once you reach Utsunomiya, follow the signs for Route 119, which will lead you directly to Nikko. Continue on Route 119, and you will enter Nikko National Park. Be aware that there might be tolls along the expressway, so keep some cash or a credit card handy.
Train and Bus
For those using public transportation, take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Utsunomiya Station. The journey takes about 50 minutes. Once at Utsunomiya Station, transfer to the JR Nikko Line and take a local train to Nikko Station, which takes approximately 45 minutes. Upon arrival at Nikko Station, you can catch a bus (Nikko City Bus) to various destinations within the park. The bus ride to the main attractions, such as Toshogu Shrine or Lake Chuzenji, may take another 30 to 50 minutes depending on where you are heading. Bus fares vary, so be prepared to pay around 500-1,000 yen for a one-way trip.
Local Transportation
Once you are in Nikko, the local bus system is a convenient way to explore Nikko National Park. The buses are frequent and cover major attractions. A day pass for unlimited rides on local buses can be purchased for about 1,000 yen, which is a great deal if you plan to visit multiple sites in the park.
