Public Transport

From Kyoto Station, take the Kyoto Municipal Subway to Ishida Station. The subway ride takes approximately 29 minutes. From Ishida Station, walk about 15 minutes to reach Hokai-ji Temple. The subway fare is between 220-360 yen for adults, depending on the distance. A one-day subway and bus pass is available for 1,100 yen for adults.

Hokai-ji Temple, formally known as Kinryuzan Shakuman-in Endon Hokai-ji, is a Buddhist temple of the Tendai school located in Kyoto, Japan. Founded in 1335 by Ashikaga Takauji under the order of Emperor Go-Daigo, the temple was built to appease the spirits of the Hojo clan who perished in 1333. The temple stands on the former site of the Komachi residence, once home to the Hojo family.Hokai-ji is also known as Hagidera, or "bush-clover temple", because of the numerous bush clover (hagi) blooming in its gardens in September. During the equinoctial week of Buddhist services, the grounds are covered with white bush clover. In addition to the bush clover, the temple also features cherry blossoms, white magnolia, crape myrtle, hibiscus, red spider lilies, plum blossoms, and camellias throughout the year.The temple's principal deity is Kosodate Kyodoku Jizo Bosatsu, a guardian of childrearing, sculpted in the late 14th century. The main hall also houses revered figures such as Bishamonten, the god of victory; Juntei Kannon, the mother of Buddhas; and Enma Daio, the judge of the underworld. Visitors can also find colorful depictions of goddesses of fortune and connection.
