Discover more about Higashi Chaya District

The Higashi Chaya District, also known as Higashi Chaya-gai, is the largest and most prominent of Kanazawa's three preserved geisha districts. Established in 1820 by Maeda Narinaga, the 12th lord of the Kaga Domain, it was created to consolidate teahouses from around the castle town. This ensured better management and promoted cultural development. Today, the district is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government. The district's main street is lined with well-preserved, two-story wooden buildings featuring distinctive lattice windows called "kimusuko". These buildings, historically teahouses (chaya), were exclusive establishments where geisha entertained wealthy merchants and nobility with music, dance, and games. While many buildings now house cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops, the atmosphere of the Edo period remains palpable.Visitors can explore former and current teahouses to get a glimpse into this unique culture. Ochaya Shima is a preserved teahouse that now serves as a museum, showcasing the architecture and artifacts of the geisha world. Kaikaro is a working geisha house that opens to the public during the day, offering tea and sweets in a refined setting. In the evenings, the sounds of shamisen and drums may be heard as geisha continue to entertain. Kanazawa is famous for its gold leaf, and Higashi Chaya District offers many opportunities to purchase gold leaf products and even try your hand at applying gold leaf to crafts.
