Walking
From the Takachiho Bus Center, the gorge is approximately a 30-40 minute walk. Follow the main road towards the gorge, enjoying the town's scenery along the way. Alternatively, rent an electric bicycle near the bus center for around ¥500 per hour. Note that the walk down to the boat rental area involves steep stone steps. Parking is available near the gorge, with options like Araragi Parking (¥300) and Oshioi Parking (¥500). Free parking is available at Ohashi Parking, but it may be further from the boat terminal. During peak season, shuttle buses operate between the parking lots and the gorge.
Public Transport
From Kumamoto Airport, take a direct bus to the Takachiho Bus Center (approximately 2 hours, ¥2400). These buses are operated by Kyushu Sanko Bus and Miyazaki Kotsu. From the Takachiho Bus Center, follow the walking directions to the gorge. Alternatively, take a taxi from the bus center to the gorge. Taxi fares will vary, but expect to pay around ¥1000-¥1500 for the short trip.
