    The Highest Point of Japan's National Routes is accessible via Route 292, also known as the Shiga Kusatsu Kogen Route. From Kusatsu Onsen, follow Route 292 past Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane towards Shiga Kogen. The road winds through the mountains, offering scenic views. There is a small parking area at the highest point. Note that the road is typically closed from late November to mid-April due to heavy snow. Be aware that a section near Mt. Shirane may have restrictions due to volcanic activity. There are no tolls on the immediate approach. Parking is free but can be limited.

  • Bus

    From Kusatsu Onsen, you can take a bus towards Nagano which uses the Shiga Kusatsu Kogen Route. The bus will pass by the Highest Point of Japan's National Routes. Check the bus schedules and availability, as services may be limited, especially during off-peak seasons. The scenery is better viewed from the left side of the bus when traveling from Kusatsu Onsen, but the view from Shibu Tōge Pass is visible from the right. A one-way bus fare from Kusatsu Onsen to Shiga Kogen costs approximately ¥2000-¥3000.
