Getting There

  • Car

    If you are traveling by car, you will need to navigate to Kongobu-ji Chumon (Central Gate) located at 132 Koyasan, Koya, Ito District, Wakayama 648-0211. From the center of Kumano Kodo, follow the signs to Route 42. Continue on Route 42 until you reach the junction to Route 371. Take Route 371, which will lead you up to Koyasan. The journey typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Parking is available near the temple, however, expect to pay a parking fee of around 500 yen.

  • Public Transportation (Train & Bus)

    For those using public transportation, first, make your way to Kii Tanabe Station by taking a train from any of the nearby stations in the Kumano Kodo area. From Kii Tanabe Station, take the Nankai Koya Line to Gokurakubashi Station. The train ride takes about 1 hour. Once you arrive at Gokurakubashi Station, transfer to the cable car that will take you to Koyasan Station. The cable car ride takes approximately 5 minutes. From Koyasan Station, you can take a local bus or walk to Kongobu-ji Chumon (Central Gate), which is about a 15-minute walk. Note that the bus fare is approximately 300 yen.
