Public Transport

From Kyoto Station, take Kyoto City Bus number 50 directly to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The ride takes approximately 30 minutes and costs ¥230. Alternatively, take the Karasuma Subway Line to Imadegawa Station and then transfer to bus 203 to reach the shrine. Get off at the Kitano Tenmangu-mae bus stop.

From Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), it is approximately a 20-minute walk to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Follow the main roads east, keeping an eye out for signs pointing towards the shrine.

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, located in Kyoto's Kamigyo Ward, is a significant Shinto shrine with a rich history and cultural importance. Founded in 947 AD to appease the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and politician who was unjustly exiled, the shrine has become a symbol of learning and is visited by students praying for academic success. Michizane was deified in 986 AD and became known as Tenjin, the god of honesty and sincerity.The shrine's architecture reflects the Momoyama period, with the main complex constructed in 1607. The main hall, Ro-mon Gate, and Sanko-mon Gate feature elaborate carvings, gold decorations, and vivid colors. The Treasure Hall houses a collection of artifacts, including the Kitano Tenjin Engi Emaki, a National Treasure that illustrates Michizane's life and the shrine's history.Kitano Tenmangu is also known for its seasonal beauty. The plum garden features around 1,500 plum trees that bloom from late February to early March. The Plum Blossom Festival (Baikasai) is held on February 25th, with tea ceremonies served by maiko and geiko. In the autumn, the maple garden (Momiji-en) displays vibrant fall foliage. On the 25th of each month, a lively flea market takes place on the shrine grounds, offering a variety of goods and food.
