Discover more about Sawayama Castle Ruins

Sawayama Castle Ruins, located on Mt. Sawa in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, offer a captivating journey into Japan's feudal past. The castle's history began in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) and it was held by the Sasaki clan. During the Warring States period, control of the castle shifted between powerful clans. In 1590, Ishida Mitsunari, a key figure in the Toyotomi administration, became lord of Sawayama Castle and significantly expanded its fortifications, including a five-story keep. Sawayama Castle was considered a vital strategic point in Omi Province. After Ishida Mitsunari's defeat in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, the castle was attacked and fell. Subsequently, much of the castle's materials were used in the construction of Hikone Castle. Today, visitors can hike to the mountaintop site and explore the remaining stone walls and foundations. The summit provides panoramic views of Hikone Castle, Lake Biwa, and Mt. Ibuki.
