Discover more about Kyoto Botanical Gardens

Founded in 1924, the Kyoto Botanical Gardens is Japan's oldest public botanical garden, a serene escape in the northern part of Kyoto. The gardens were established to commemorate the enthronement of the Emperor Taisho. Spanning 24 hectares (59 acres), it features approximately 120,000 plants representing some 12,000 species. The gardens are organized into distinct areas, including a Bamboo Garden, Bonsai Exhibit, Camellia Garden, Cherry Trees (with around 500 trees of different varieties), a European Style Garden, Flower Bed, Hydrangea Garden, Japanese Iris Garden, Japanese Native Plants, Lotus Pond, Nakaragi-no-mori Pond, Peony Garden, Perennial and Useful Plants Garden, Sunken Garden, and Ume Grove. After falling into disuse during World War II and serving as a garrison, the gardens were revived and reopened in 1961. In 1992, a large conservatory complex was added, housing approximately 25,000 specimens representing 4,500 species. The conservatory is designed to resemble the nearby Kitayama Mountains. Inside, visitors can explore various climate zones and discover rare plants such as orchids, cacti, carnivorous plants, and exotic ferns. The gardens are a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, offering seasonal beauty throughout the year. Spring brings vibrant cherry blossoms, while autumn showcases fiery foliage. In December, the garden transforms into a winter wonderland with LED light displays. Maps in English, Chinese, and Japanese are available at the entrance.
