Discover more about Maruyama Park

Maruyama Park, Kyoto's oldest park, is a public oasis where nature and culture intertwine. Situated in the Higashiyama district, next to Yasaka Shrine, it offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle. The park dates back to 1886 and has been designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty since 1931. The park is most famous for its cherry blossoms, drawing huge crowds during the hanami season in early April. The centerpiece is a magnificent weeping cherry tree (shidarezakura), illuminated at night to create a magical spectacle. Besides the iconic weeping cherry, the park boasts around 680 cherry trees of various species. Maruyama Park features stroll gardens, rest houses, small orchards, and Japanese restaurants. Landscape architect Ogawa Jihei VII designed a garden area with a waterfall and stream, creating a serene atmosphere. The park also holds cultural events and festivals throughout the year, including the Higashiyama Hanatoro Festival in March, where thousands of lanterns illuminate the park. During the summer, the park becomes a hub of activity for the Gion Matsuri.
