Bust of Dr. William S. Clark
A tribute to William S. Clark, the visionary founder of Hokkaido University, whose inspiring words echo through generations.
The Bust of Dr. William S. Clark is located on the Hokkaido University campus in Sapporo, Japan. William Smith Clark was an American professor who was invited by the Japanese government to help establish the Sapporo Agricultural College (SAC), which later became Hokkaido University. During his brief eight-month stay in Sapporo in 1876-1877, Clark significantly impacted the development of Hokkaido and left a lasting legacy on Japanese culture. The bust, officially named the William S. Clark Bust, commemorates Clark's contributions. Erected in 1926 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the university's founding, it was unfortunately lost due to metal contributions during the Pacific War but was rebuilt in 1948. The bust is located in the northwest corner of the central green area of Hokkaido University, near Furukawa Hall. Clark's famous phrase, "Boys, be ambitious!" has become a nationally known motto in Japan and is closely associated with Hokkaido University. The bust serves as a reminder of Clark's vision and continues to inspire young people. Another, full-bodied statue of Dr. Clark stands at the Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill.
