Overview
Awaji Yumebutai, translating to "Dream Stage," is an architectural marvel created by Tadao Ando on Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture. Built in the wake of the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake, the complex serves as a memorial, a conference center, a hotel (Hotel Grand Nikko Awaji), and a landscape of gardens.Originally, the site was a quarry used to gather earth for artificial islands in Osaka Bay, including Kansai International Airport. Ando transformed the scarred landscape into a space that harmonizes architecture, nature, and human interaction. The complex features Ando's signature use of exposed concrete, clean lines, and geometric shapes, seamlessly integrating with the surrounding environment.Key attractions include the Hyakudanen Garden, a cascade of 100 stepped terraces adorned with seasonal flowers, offering panoramic views of the complex and Osaka Bay. Water features, such as shallow pools and cascading waterfalls, are integrated throughout the site, creating a sense of tranquility. The Shell Garden, featuring one million seashells in shallow pools, exemplifies the blend of artificial and natural elements. Visitors can explore the complex's unique pathways, discover art installations, and appreciate the seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
