Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama: A Mountain of Macaques and Views
Encounter wild monkeys and breathtaking Kyoto views at Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. A unique wildlife experience awaits!
Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama offers a unique opportunity to observe Japanese macaques, or snow monkeys, in their natural environment. Unlike a zoo, the monkeys roam freely on Mt. Iwatayama, and visitors can interact with them in a designated feeding area. The park was established in 1957 to protect the local macaque population and provide a secure habitat. A scientist from Kyoto University began feeding the monkeys for research in the early 1950s. This eventually led to the park's opening and the monkeys becoming accustomed to human presence. Today, the park is home to around 120 monkeys. The experience begins with a scenic, but moderately steep, 20-30 minute hike up Mt. Iwatayama. The trail is well-maintained with benches along the way. At the summit, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of Kyoto city. The monkeys can be seen throughout the park, playing, grooming, and simply relaxing. For a small fee, visitors can purchase food to feed the monkeys inside a designated enclosure. This provides a safe and fun way to interact with the animals. Remember not to stare directly at the monkeys or touch them. The park is open year-round, but hours vary depending on the season.
