Discover more about Former Chikurin-in Temple

The Former Chikurin-in Temple, or Kyu-Chikurin-in, offers a tranquil retreat from the bustle of modern life. Originally a 'satobo,' a residence for retired monks from the nearby Enryaku-ji Temple, it provided a peaceful place for contemplation and rest. During the Meiji period, the temple transitioned to a privately-owned villa before eventually being acquired by Otsu City. The main building, constructed in 1897, provides stunning views of the meticulously designed garden. Visitors can admire the scenery from the drawing room on the first floor or explore the newly opened second floor. The garden itself is a highlight, featuring a harmonious blend of natural elements: flowing streams sourced from the Omiya River, carefully placed stones, diverse trees, and lush moss carpets. The backdrop of Mount Hachioji enhances the garden's beauty, creating a borrowed landscape that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding environment. Within the garden, you'll find two distinct tea houses: the larger 'Hiroma' and the smaller 'Amano-gawa-seki,' the latter boasting a rare design with two doorways. The garden has been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty. Visitors can also enjoy matcha green tea while taking in the scenery. The temple is known for its autumn colors, which can be viewed from the traditional tatami room.
