Fujinomori Shrine: A Sanctuary of Victory and Horses

Fujinomori Shrine, located in the Fushimi Ward of Kyoto, is a historical gem with a story stretching back over 1,800 years. Founded by Empress Jingu, the shrine predates Kyoto's establishment as the capital and holds a special place in Japanese culture. It is known as the origin of Shōbu no Sekku, which evolved into the modern Children's Day celebrated on May 5th. The shrine is dedicated to several deities, including Susano-o no Mikoto, Wakeikazuchi no Mikoto, and members of the imperial lineage. Over time, Fujinomori Shrine integrated other local shrines, resulting in a main sanctuary divided into three sections. The main hall, a cultural asset of Kyoto City, was donated by Emperor Naka-gomon in 1712. Fujinomori Shrine is particularly famous for its association with horses and victory. This connection has made it a popular destination for those in the horseracing industry, who come to pray for good luck. Visitors can purchase charms for good luck at the shrine office. The shrine also features a statue of a sacred horse, believed to bring good fortune in competitions. A unique vending machine on the grounds dispenses drinks accompanied by horse-related sounds for added luck. In June, the shrine grounds transform into a beautiful hydrangea garden with 3,500 plants in various colors. During the Hydrangea Festival, visitors can stroll through the garden and enjoy traditional performances. The Fujinomori Festival, held annually from May 1st to 5th, is a highlight, featuring the Kakeuma Shinji, an acrobatic horse-riding ritual with a 1,200-year history. Riders display their skills on horseback, a tradition said to have originated with samurai warriors praying for victory.
