Fushimi-Momoyama Castle, or Fushimi Castle, is located in Kyoto's Fushimi district. The castle's story is one of ambition, destruction, and rebirth. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a powerful feudal lord, began construction in 1592, intending it as his retirement palace. Completed in 1594, it was a symbol of his power and hosted important events, including tea ceremonies. The castle was known for its opulent design, including a golden tea room. However, its glory was short-lived. In 1596, a devastating earthquake destroyed the castle. Hideyoshi rebuilt it, but he died in 1598. In 1600, the castle was severely damaged during attacks before the Battle of Sekigahara. After the battle, Tokugawa Ieyasu took control and restored it. However, in 1623, the castle was dismantled, and its materials were used in other structures. The current castle is a 1964 concrete replica built near the original site. For nearly 40 years, it was the centerpiece of an amusement park called Fushimi-Momoyama-jo Castle Land. While the interior is currently closed, the castle grounds are open to the public. Visitors can stroll through the grounds, admire the architecture, and imagine the castle's dramatic past. The castle is surrounded by a park, offering scenic views, especially during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons.
