    Discover more about Rokuo-in

Rokuo-in Temple, nestled in the Sagano district of Kyoto, offers a tranquil retreat from the bustling city. Founded in 1380 by Shunoku Myoha, a Zen instructor to Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it once rivaled the nearby Tenryu-ji Temple in grandeur. Though much of the original structure was lost in the Onin War, Rokuo-in was revived in the Edo period and remains a captivating example of Zen Buddhist architecture and garden design. The temple's main attraction is the approach to the shrine, a picturesque path lined with maple trees that create a stunning tunnel of color in autumn. The path leads to the San-mon gate, the only original structure remaining from the temple's founding. The gate is inscribed with 'Kakuyuzan,' the temple's sango (mountain name), penned by Yoshimitsu Ashikaga. The Hontei garden is a flat karesansui (dry landscape) moss garden that incorporates the scenery of Arashiyama as its backdrop. The garden features carefully arranged stones, representing the Three Honored Ones and Zazen stones, with a Mokkoku tree aged over 300 years adding to the serene atmosphere. The Shariden Hall enshrines a relic of Buddha and is said to have inspired the design of Kinkaku-ji Temple's Shariden Hall. Rokuo-in offers visitors a chance to experience the beauty of a traditional Zen temple without the crowds often found at more famous sites. The temple also provides lodging (Shukubo) exclusively for women, offering a unique opportunity to participate in morning sermons and Zazen sessions.
