    Discover more about Shogunzuka Mound

Shogunzuka Mound, also known as Shogunzuka, is a historically significant site located in the eastern mountains of Kyoto. Legend states that in 794 AD, Emperor Kanmu stood on this very spot to survey the valley and decided to establish Kyoto as the new capital of Japan. To protect the new capital, Emperor Kanmu ordered a 2.5-meter clay statue of a shogun (general) to be buried here, fully adorned with armor, a sword, bow, and arrows. This act gave the mound its name, which translates to "Shogun's Mound". Today, Shogunzuka is renowned for its observation decks that provide unparalleled panoramic views of Kyoto. The North Observation Deck, renovated in 2014, is a spacious wooden platform offering unobstructed views of northern Kyoto and Mount Hiei. On a clear day, landmarks such as the Imperial Palace, Heian Shrine, and Nanzenji Temple can be seen. The West Observation Deck provides views of central Kyoto and, on clear days, as far as Osaka. Visitors can also explore Seiryu-den Hall, which houses a reproduction of a painting of Fudo Myoo, an important Buddhist deity. The grounds feature a Japanese garden, known for its seasonal illuminations in spring and autumn. Pine trees were planted on the grounds by political figures of the Meiji era. Shogunzuka Mound offers a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it a worthwhile destination for tourists.
