Umpenji Temple: Shikoku's Highest Pilgrimage Temple
Ascend to Shikoku's highest pilgrimage temple for stunning views, serene nature, and spiritual enrichment on the historic 88-temple circuit.
Umpenji Temple, officially known as Kyogozan Senjuin Unpenji, is the 66th temple on the famed Shikoku Pilgrimage, holding the distinction of being the highest in elevation. Perched atop Mt. Unpenji (927m) along the border of Tokushima and Kagawa prefectures, it's a site steeped in history, natural beauty, and spiritual significance. Founded by Kobo Daishi in 789, legend states that he first visited the mountain at the age of 16 seeking building materials for Zentsuji Temple (No. 75), but was moved by the mountain's sacred presence and established a temple there. Later, in 818, by order of Emperor Saga, Kobo Daishi carved the principal image, Senju Kannon Bosatsu (Thousand-armed Goddess of Mercy), and designated the temple as part of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The temple is also called Shikoku-bo and prospered as Shikoku Koya, a place of study for monks. Umpenji offers breathtaking views, especially on clear days, where the Seto Inland Sea and Sanuki Plains stretch out before you. The temple grounds showcase seasonal beauty, with hydrangeas in early summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and serene snowscapes in winter. A highlight is the collection of 500 Arhat stone statues, disciples of Buddha, each with unique features. The temple also features symbolic properties for eliminating bad fortune, and the temple shop offers goods to ward off evil spirits. For those seeking an easier ascent, the Unpenji Ropeway, one of Japan's largest, whisks visitors to near the summit in just 7 minutes. From the ropeway station, it's a short walk to the temple grounds. At the summit, visitors can also enjoy the Snow Park Unpenji (ski resort) and Wind Park Unpenji (paragliding field).
