Discover more about Kanrantei Tea House

Kanrantei Tea House, meaning "place to view ripples on water", is a historical gem in Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture. Originally constructed as part of Fushimi Castle in Kyoto by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it was gifted to Date Masamune, the lord of Sendai. Masamune's son, Date Tadamune, later relocated it to its current location in Matsushima, where it served as a guesthouse for the Date clan's wives, visiting princesses, and envoys of the Shogun. The teahouse is built in the Momoyama style, known for its fusuma (sliding doors) adorned with gold-leaf paintings. These paintings and calligraphy works by Date rulers are considered Important Cultural Properties. Visitors can admire the meticulously decorated rooms while enjoying matcha tea and seasonal sweets. A ticket is required to enter the grounds, and an additional fee covers entry into the teahouse with a matcha tea and sweet set. Behind the tea house, the Matsushima Museum displays armor, weapons, tools, and other relics of the feudal era, offering further insight into the Date clan's history. During the fall, Kanrantei hosts special evening hours for moon-viewing, harking back to its origins as a place to enjoy entertainment while watching the moon over Matsushima Bay. Kanrantei is the only surviving building from the Date clan's mansion complex in Matsushima and has been designated a Prefectural Cultural Property.
