Car
If you are driving from Yamagata City, take the Yamagata Expressway and head towards Tsuruoka. Exit at Tsuruoka IC and follow Route 345. Continue on Route 345 until you see signs for Mt. Haguro, which will direct you to Haguroyama Haguromachi Touge. The drive takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Keep an eye out for parking signs as you approach the mountain.
Public Transportation
From Yamagata Station, take the Shinkansen to Tsuruoka Station. This journey takes about 40 minutes. Once at Tsuruoka Station, transfer to a local bus heading to Mt. Haguro. The bus ride takes approximately 50 minutes. Make sure to check the bus schedule in advance, as services may vary. The bus will drop you off at the base of Mt. Haguro, from where you can begin your hike.
Taxi
If you prefer a more direct route and convenience, you can take a taxi from Tsuruoka Station to Mt. Haguro. This will take about 30 minutes and cost around 5,000 to 6,000 yen depending on traffic. Make sure to confirm the fare with the driver before starting your trip.
Walking
Once you arrive at the base of Mt. Haguro, you can start your hike which is well-marked. The trail leads you through lush forests and past historical temples. The total hike to the summit takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace. There are also rest areas and scenic viewpoints along the way.
