Discover more about SOMPO Museum of Art

The SOMPO Museum of Art, owned by the Japanese insurance company SOMPO, stands as an artistic landmark in Shinjuku. Originally established in 1976 as the Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Museum of Art on the 42nd floor of the Sompo Japan headquarters, it was reborn in July 2020 in a newly constructed six-story building. The museum's architecture features soft curves, creating inviting exhibit spaces. The museum is most famous for housing Vincent van Gogh's 'Sunflowers', one of the most iconic paintings in the world. This particular version was painted while Van Gogh awaited Gauguin's arrival in Arles, intended to decorate his room. The museum acquired the painting in 1987 for a record-breaking sum. In addition to Van Gogh, the museum features works by other masters such as Paul Cézanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Pablo Picasso, as well as Japanese artists. The SOMPO Museum of Art hosts about five exhibitions a year, showcasing both Japanese and international artists. These exhibitions cover a variety of genres, from Japanese paintings to contemporary art. The museum also supports budding artists through contests like the FACE contest, exhibiting works by contemporary artists. Visitors can also enjoy a museum shop and café.
