Fukushūen Garden: A Tranquil Chinese Oasis in Okinawa

Fukushūen Garden, or Fuzhou Garden, is a captivating oasis located in the heart of Naha, Okinawa, offering visitors a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into the historical connections between Okinawa and China. The garden was established in 1992 to mark the 10th anniversary of the sister city agreement between Naha and Fuzhou, symbolizing the cultural exchange and friendship between the two cities. The Kume district, where the garden resides, was once the center of Chinese culture and learning in the Ryukyu Kingdom, adding to the garden's historical significance. Designed and constructed with the help of artisans from Fuzhou, the garden showcases authentic Chinese architectural elements and landscaping. It features winding pathways, stone bridges, and meticulously arranged flora, all designed in accordance with Feng Shui principles to harmonize visitors with their surroundings. The garden is divided into distinct sections, each representing different seasonal landscapes with unique trees, flowers, and design elements. Key highlights include a central pond filled with colorful koi and turtles, symbolizing good luck, longevity, and wisdom. A stunning waterfall provides a tranquil backdrop, enhancing the garden's serene atmosphere. Visitors can explore various pavilions, such as the Lingbo Corridor offering panoramic views, the Pavilion of Spring representing a well-rounded character, and the Pine and Bamboo Pavilion evoking a Fuzhou summer. Throughout the year, Fukushūen Garden hosts cultural events, including the Night Garden Party, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the garden's beauty in a different light with traditional music and performances.
