Discover more about Shiroyama Park

Shiroyama Park, resting on a small peninsula in Takahama, seamlessly blends historical significance with natural beauty. Once the site of Takahama Castle, constructed during the Muromachi Period (1336-1573), the park now provides a peaceful open space for relaxation and stunning views of the Japan Sea. The park is known for its series of striking sea caves, celebrated since ancient times as Yana no Kishō, or the “Beautiful Spot of Eight Caves”. Among these natural wonders, the most famous is Meikyōdō Cave, where the view of the ocean through the cave's opening is said to resemble a mirror. This breathtaking scene even drew the attention of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate and the visionary behind Kyoto's Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji). Visitors can explore winding forested paths, perfect for leisurely strolls, as well as observation points looking out onto the surrounding waters which are ideal for swimming, paddle-boarding, snorkeling and fishing. The park also features a large grassy square, ideal for picnics and enjoying the cherry blossoms in spring. Fishing is a popular activity along the seashore. While visiting, be mindful of potentially dangerous footing in rocky areas, especially with children.
