The Keeper of the Plains: A Cultural Icon of Wichita

Getting There

• Walking

  From downtown Wichita, start at the corner of Douglas Avenue and Main Street. Head west on Douglas Avenue for about 0.5 miles until you reach the Arkansas River. Once you reach the river, turn left onto the Riverwalk Path and follow the path north along the riverbank. Continue walking for approximately 0.8 miles until you see the Keeper of the Plains. You will cross over a pedestrian bridge that leads directly to the landmark located at 339 Veterans Pkwy, which is a prominent spot where you can view the iconic statue.

• Public Transportation

  Begin your journey by locating the nearest Wichita Transit bus stop. Take the Route 21 bus towards 'Wichita State University' and get off at the stop near the intersection of 2nd St and Broadway St. From there, transfer to the Route 25 bus heading towards 'West 21st St & Maize Road'. Disembark at the stop closest to the intersection of 21st St and the Arkansas River. From this point, walk southeast along the Riverwalk Path for about 0.5 miles, and you will reach the Keeper of the Plains.

• Biking

  If you're renting a bike, start at the Wichita State University campus. Head south on the bike lanes along Hillside St until you reach Douglas Ave. Turn left onto Douglas Ave and continue west until you reach the Arkansas River. Once you arrive at the river, utilize the bike path that runs parallel to the river and bike north for approximately 1 mile. Follow the signs leading to the Keeper of the Plains, where you can park your bike at the designated bike racks.
