    History of Frankfort

Follow the city from Roman Londinium to its modern global identity through landmark moments that still shape the visitor experience.

    Founding of Frankfort

Frankfort, the capital city of Kentucky, was founded in 1786 by General James Wilkinson. The city was named after an early settler, Stephen Frank, who was killed in an Indian skirmish at a river crossing in the area, which became known as 'Frank's Ford.'

    State Capital Designation

In 1792, the year Kentucky became the 15th state to join the Union, Frankfort was designated as the state capital. The decision was influenced by its central location and the donation of land and construction funds by local investors.

    Old State Capitol

Constructed between 1827 and 1830, the Old State Capitol is a Greek Revival masterpiece designed by Gideon Shryock. This building served as the state’s capitol until 1910 and remains a significant historical landmark in Frankfort, now housing the Kentucky Historical Society.

    Civil War Era

During the Civil War, Frankfort was the only Union capital to be occupied by Confederate forces. In 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg briefly took control of the city. The occupation was short-lived, as Union forces quickly reclaimed it.

    Governor's Mansion

Completed in 1914, the Governor's Mansion in Frankfort is an architectural gem modeled after the Petit Trianon in Versailles, France. It has been the residence of Kentucky's governors and a symbol of the state's rich heritage.

    Modern Developments

In recent decades, Frankfort has seen significant modernization and revitalization efforts. The downtown area has been rejuvenated with new businesses, restaurants, and cultural attractions, while preserving its historical charm and significance.
