Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you're traveling by car, start your journey from Moshi, which is a popular base for climbers heading to Kilimanjaro. From Moshi, take the B1 road heading towards Arusha. After approximately 30 km, turn onto the A23 road towards the Kilimanjaro National Park entrance. The main entrance is near Marangu, where you'll need to pay the park entrance fee, which is approximately $70 for international visitors. Continue on the A23 until you reach the park gates. After entering the park, follow the signs to the Marangu route, which will guide you towards the ascent to Stella Point. The drive from Moshi to the park entrance takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a local matatu (shared taxi) from Moshi to Marangu. The fare is usually around 2,000 TZS (Tanzanian Shillings), which is about $1. After arriving in Marangu, you can hire a local guide or join a trekking group to take you to Stella Point. Ensure you arrange this in advance, as it's required to have a guide when trekking in the national park. The trek to Stella Point from Marangu typically takes about 6 to 8 hours, depending on your pace and acclimatization.
Guided Trekking
Most travelers opt for guided trekking services when heading to Stella Point. Numerous companies in Moshi offer packages that include transportation from Moshi to the park entrance, park fees, guides, and meals. Prices for these packages can vary widely, but expect to pay anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 depending on the length of the trek and services included. It's advisable to book in advance, especially during peak climbing seasons.
