Discover more about Xe Bangfai River

The Xe Bangfai River Cave is a remarkable natural wonder in Laos, hidden within the Hin Nam No National Protected Area. The cave, carved by the Xe Bangfai River over millions of years, boasts an active river passage that stretches 6.4 kilometers, with an average width of 76 meters and a height of 53 meters. In some areas, the cave expands to a staggering 200 meters wide and 120 meters high. Until a National Geographic expedition in 2008, the cave remained largely unknown to the outside world, adding to its mystique. Local villagers traditionally knew the cave as Tham Khoun Xe, believing it to be the source of the Xe Bangfai River and home to a benevolent spirit. Legend has it that this spirit would lend beautiful clothes for ceremonies and even restore broken musical instruments. Inside, visitors can witness stunning cave formations, including flowstone draperies, cave pearls, and massive gour pools. The cave supports a unique ecosystem, housing endemic species like the cave spider and cave-adapted scorpion. Boating trips are available, allowing visitors to explore up to 2 kilometers into the cave before encountering rapids. A climb through a branch cavity leads to a chamber called Dragon Hatchery, offering a dimly lit view of the massive opening. While the cave is generally not recommended to enter between June and October due to high water levels, the area remains open for other activities, including homestays and exploring nearby attractions.
