From Thakhek, travel east along Route 12 to Mahaxay (43km), then turn right to Panam junction (25km). Turn left at Panam to go to Boualapha (68km). From Boualapha, turn left after the District Administration Office, then take the 1st turn right (230m) to go to Ban Nong Ping (14km). The final 14km to Ban Nong Ping can be a bumpy ride. During the rainy season, road access may be difficult, but boat access from Ban Pakphanang is available.

From Ban Pakphanang, take a scenic two-hour boat trip along the Nam Phanang River to Ban Nong Ping, which provides access to the Xe Bangfai River Cave. This route is particularly useful during the rainy season when road access is limited. Prices for the boat are typically posted on a board in Ban Pakphanang.
