Discover more about Venta waterfall

Venta Waterfall, or Ventas Rumba as it's known in Latvian, is a remarkable natural landmark located in the town of Kuldīga, western Latvia. What sets it apart is its extraordinary width, recognized as the widest waterfall in Europe. During the spring floods, it can expand up to an impressive 270 meters. Although its height is only around 1.8 to 2.2 meters, the sheer breadth of the falls creates a stunning spectacle. The waterfall is formed by Devonian dolomite, with the lower, more brittle layers eroding faster than the upper layers. This process causes the upper layers to overhang and occasionally collapse, leading to the waterfall's gradual recession. The stronger flow in the central part contributes to a faster retreat in the middle, shaping the waterfall over time.Historically, the Venta Waterfall has been an obstacle on the Venta River, a medieval inland shipping route. Duke Jacob of Courland even attempted to dig a bypass in the 17th century, but the hard dolomite proved too challenging. One of the most fascinating aspects of Venta Waterfall is the 'flying fish' phenomenon. During the spring and autumn spawning seasons, various fish species, including salmon and vimba, leap over the rapids to reach their breeding grounds. This incredible sight has drawn visitors for centuries. In fact, Duke Jacob invented a unique method of catching these jumping fish using baskets placed along the waterfall, leading to Kuldīga being known as a town where you could 'catch salmon in the air'.Today, visitors can admire the Venta Waterfall from various viewpoints along the riverbanks and the old brick bridge built in 1874. The town of Kuldīga itself is a charming destination with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and a rich cultural heritage.
