From 1872 to 1881, Rainis, born Jānis Pliekšāns, spent nine years of his childhood here when his father leased the Berķenele semi-manor. This period profoundly shaped his worldview and inspired his early poetry, with impressions of Berķenele reflected in his collection "Dagdas piecu skiču burtnīcas".The estate itself comprises a residential house, stable, barn, ice cellar, and an expansive garden. While the original Pliekšāns family items are not preserved, the house offers insight into Rainis's biography and the Pliekšāns family. Visitors can explore exhibits dedicated to Rainis's life, traditional crafts, and art displays. The site hosts various cultural activities, including excursions, creative workshops, children's camps, seminars, literary evenings, and concerts.The former manor barn features an exposition of ancient crafts, while the second floor hosts an exhibition hall with rotating displays of handicrafts and art. Visitors can also dress up in period costumes of landlords and servants.
