Dinaburg Castle, also known as Vecdaugavpils (Old Daugavpils), was established in 1275 by the Livonian Order under Ernst von Ratzeburg. The castle served as a crucial border fortress against Lithuania and a residence for the Daugavpils komtur from 1367 to 1559. Situated on the high bank of the Daugava River in what is now Naujene parish, the location was strategically chosen to control the waterway and observe the surrounding lands.Archaeological excavations have revealed the castle's foundations, and a scale model provides visitors with an idea of its original appearance. The site also features the Dinaburg Nature Trail and the Knight's Square recreation area. From the castle hill, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Daugava River.The castle's history is marked by numerous conflicts. Shortly after its construction, Lithuanian forces led by King Troiden besieged it. In 1577, the forces of Ivan the Terrible destroyed the castle, leading to a loss of strategic importance and the construction of new fortifications in present-day Daugavpils. Today, the ruins stand as a state-protected archaeological monument, inviting exploration and reflection on the region's rich past.
