Getting There

  • Bus

    From Sigulda bus station, take bus number 3112 towards Krimulda. The bus will take you directly to the 'Krimulda' stop. From there, walk about 300 meters along Krimuldas iela towards the castle. Bus tickets cost approximately €0.50.

  • Cable Car

    Take the cable car from Sigulda across the Gauja River to Krimulda. From the cable car station, it's a short walk to the castle ruins. A one-way ticket costs €14 for adults and €8 for children.

  • Walking

    If you are in Sigulda, you can walk to Krimulda Castle. Head northeast on Krimuldas iela, following the signs to the castle. The walk takes approximately 30 minutes and offers scenic views.

Krimulda Castle, located just outside Sigulda in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, invites you to explore its captivating ruins and rich history. Perched on a high bank on the right side of the Gauja River, the castle's strategic location made it nearly impossible to conquer. Built in the 13th century, it served as a stronghold for the Riga High Council.Originally, the castle was an impressive structure with a large interior courtyard and a defensive wall. Protected by the steep Gauja valley and the Vikmeste River, it stood as a formidable fortress. However, in 1601, during the Swedish-Polish War, the castle was burned down and left unrepaired.Today, the castle hill is forested, with only a fragment of the castle wall remaining. Despite its ruined state, Krimulda Castle offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and imagine medieval life. The well-maintained territory around the ruins provides ample opportunities for leisurely walks and picturesque photo spots. The site also offers stunning views of the Gauja River Valley and the surrounding landscape.In the mid-19th century, the castle regained importance as a romantic addition to a park under the ownership of Prince Lieven. The nearby Krimulda Manor adds to the charm of the area, with its classicist architecture and scenic park.
