Discover more about Velnalas klintis un Velna ala

Velnalas Klintis (Devil's Cliffs) and Velna Ala (Devil's Cave) are located in the Gauja National Park, near the town of Sigulda, Latvia. The cliffs rise dramatically from the Gauja River, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The cave, Velna Ala, is nestled within these cliffs and is shrouded in local folklore. The cliffs themselves are an impressive geological formation, stretching 250 meters in length and reaching up to 15 meters in height. Formed over thousands of years, the sandstone cliffs showcase the power of natural erosion. The cave is located about 8 meters above the Gauja River. It began forming more than 10,000 years ago through a combination of river erosion and the activity of a now-extinct underground spring. The cave reaches a depth of 35 meters. Velna Ala has a long history as a pagan cult site. The cave's ceiling has six openings, known as the Devil's chimneys. Local legends tell of the Devil seeking refuge in the cave after being caught out by the sound of a rooster. Other stories claim the cave was a hideout for criminals. Today, visitors can explore the area's trails and enjoy the views. Please note that the cave is only viewable from across the river.
