The Strenči Memorial Site of 1941 Jewish Victims stands as a solemn reminder of the tragic events that unfolded during the Nazi occupation of Latvia. In August 1941, approximately nine Jews living in Strenči were murdered in a forest near Valkas Street. Shortly after, around 20 Jewish patients and employees of the Strenči Psychiatric Neurological Hospital were also killed at the Gauja River. In 2008, the Council of Jewish Communities of Latvia erected a memorial stone at the site of the forest killings. The inscription on the stone reads: “On 11 August 1941 in this forest the Nazis and their supporters shot 9 Jews from Strenči town: the family of L. Schubitz and dentist Gita Tafelstein with her family”. In 1960, the remains of those killed at both the forest and the river were reinterred in a cemetery of victims of fascism. A monument was erected with the inscription “Eternal Remembrance to the Victims of Fascism. 1941–1944,” along with concrete plaques bearing the names of the deceased, though these plaques are no longer present. The memorial site provides a place for reflection on the atrocities of the Holocaust and honors the memory of those who lost their lives. It is a reminder of the importance of tolerance and understanding in the face of hatred and prejudice.
