Discover more about Dobele Castle Ruins

Dobele Castle Ruins stand as a powerful reminder of Latvia's medieval history. Originally built by the Livonian Order between 1335 and 1347 on the site of a former wooden Semigallian fortress dating back to 1000 BC, the castle has witnessed centuries of conflict and change. For centuries, the castle served as an important administrative center and military stronghold. It endured sieges and occupations by various forces, including Swedish troops in the 17th century. Briefly, from 1643 to 1649, it was home to Elisabeth Magdalena, the widow of the Duke of Courland. Severely damaged during the Polish-Swedish War and the Great Northern War, the castle was abandoned in 1729, falling into ruin as locals repurposed its stones. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, including the castle chapel which was reconstructed in 2020 as a multifunctional cultural center with an observation deck. The castle offers a glimpse into medieval life and provides panoramic views of Dobele and the surrounding landscape. The grounds also host cultural events, continuing the castle's legacy as a gathering place.
