Discover more about Powder Tower

The Powder Tower, or Pulvertornis in Latvian, stands as a powerful reminder of Riga's medieval past. Originally erected in the 14th century as part of the city's defensive fortifications, it was first known as the Sand Tower. Its strategic location overlooking the Daugava River made it a crucial vantage point for defending the city. In the 17th century, the tower began to be used for storing gunpowder, leading to its current name. The tower has witnessed centuries of history, enduring sieges and political shifts. The current structure was rebuilt in 1650 after being destroyed in 1621 during a Swedish attack. Cannonballs embedded in the walls serve as a reminder of past conflicts. Today, the Powder Tower is home to the Latvian War Museum, established in 1919. The museum's exhibits showcase Latvia's military history, including weapons, uniforms, and other military artifacts. Visitors can explore the tower's interior and learn about Latvia's struggle for independence.
