T'sehlanyane River Source: The Heart of Lesotho's Highlands

Explore the pristine source of the T'sehlanyane River, gateway to Lesotho's natural beauty and hiking adventures in the Maluti Mountains.

The T'sehlanyane River Source marks the origin of a vital waterway in the heart of Lesotho's Maluti Mountains. Located within the Leribe District, this nature preserve serves as a gateway to the larger Ts'ehlanyane National Park, a protected area renowned for its rugged terrain, sub-alpine landscapes, and unique biodiversity. The area surrounding the river source is characterized by its high altitude, ranging from 1,940 to 3,112 meters (6,365 to 10,210 ft), resulting in a diverse array of habitat types. The upper slopes support rare heath-like mountain fynbos, adorned with colorful aloes, irises, and other flowering plants that bloom in spring. The park is also a stronghold for the berg bamboo *Thamnocalamus tessellatus*, a Maloti-Drakensberg endemic plant, from which both the river and the park derive their name. Visitors to the T'sehlanyane River Source and the broader national park can immerse themselves in the natural beauty through hiking and horseback riding. Trails cater to various fitness levels, offering stunning views of the Maloti Mountains, crystal-clear streams, and opportunities to encounter wildlife such as eland and rock hyraxes. Birdwatchers will find the park particularly rewarding, with sightings of bush blackcap, Cape batis, and the majestic bearded vulture possible. The park also protects one of Lesotho's last remaining indigenous forests, featuring species like ouhout (*Leucosidea sericea*) and the vital berg bamboo. This makes it an ecologically significant area, promoting eco-tourism and conservation in the region.

Local tips

  • The best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons (March-April & September) for pleasant weather and clear skies.
  • Pack warm clothes, as temperatures can drop significantly, especially at night due to the high altitude.
  • Consider booking accommodation at Maliba Lodge, located within the park, for convenient access to hiking trails.
  • Inform the rangers at the park entrance of your hiking plans and expected return time.
  • Bring sunscreen and a hat, as the high altitude increases the risk of sun exposure.
