Start at the Butha-Buthe bus station, which is centrally located. Head south on Main Street until you reach the intersection with the road leading to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Turn right onto this road and continue walking. Keep an eye out for local signage that may direct you towards Tjonono. After approximately 2 kilometers, you will reach a sign indicating the direction to Tjonono. Follow this road, which may have some uphill sections, for another 1.5 kilometers. As you get closer, you'll see natural landmarks and local residences that signify you're nearing the area.
Biking
If you prefer biking, rent a bicycle from a local shop in Butha-Buthe. Start from the Butha-Buthe bus station and follow Main Street south. After 1 kilometer, turn right onto the road towards the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Continue for about 2 kilometers, then look for the Tjonono sign. This route has some hilly parts, so be prepared for a challenging ride. The total biking distance is approximately 5 kilometers.
Hiking
For an adventurous experience, you can hike to Tjonono from Butha-Buthe. Begin at the Butha-Buthe bus station and head south on Main Street. After about 1 kilometer, take the right turn towards the Lesotho Highlands Water Project road. This trail can be steep and may take you through some rugged terrain, so wear appropriate hiking shoes. Follow the road signs pointing to Tjonono, which is about 4 kilometers from the turnoff. Enjoy the scenic views along the way!
